With energy prices on the rise, the last thing you want to do is use more electricity than is required. Plus, that is without even considering the impact it has on the environment! So, to stop wasting electricity and your hard earned cash in the process, read on to discover some of the ways you may be wasting electricity without even realising it.

Ignoring power hours – A lot of power businesses provide discounted rates after a certain time, for example, after 8.00 pm. Therefore, it is not only wise to focus on how you do things around the home, but also when you do them. For example, you may want to schedule in your dishwashing and laundry so that it is done during this off-peak hours.

Fridge gazing – We all love a good fridge gaze, don’t we? Especially those of us who work from home! When we are bored or need a break from the computer, we often take a stroll to the fridge, and stand in front of it for a lifetime. Nine times out of ten we don’t even take anything out of there. It is likely we are expecting to see a shed load of goodies that we never bought magically appear! Not only is this utterly pointless, but you aren’t doing your electricity bill any favours in the process.

You don’t embrace eco-friendly and sustainable power around the home – In the current day and age, there are so many different ways we can embrace the use of renewable energy sources so that we can better the planet and our bank balances in the process. If this is something you are not doing, it is time to make a change. You can start off small with the likes of solar panels, which are available at businesses such as 4WD Supacentre. Yes, this will cost an initial outlay, but you will quickly make the money you have spent, and then some!

Switch the cold water laundry loads – Did you know that heating water accounts for 90 per cent of the total power that is required to do a load of laundry? Therefore, if you cut out the hot water, you can reduce your laundry expenses considerably. Try switching to cold water for a month and see if you notice a difference. You can also be tactical with your laundry in the sense that you can reserve your hot water washes for clothing with tough stains.

Plugging but not playing – You didn’t think you would be able to read this post and get away with this one, did you? Having something plugged in, yet not in use, still uses electricity. You have probably been told this a million times before, but it is true. Take the plug out and turn the switch off to save yourself some pennies!

Are you currently wasting electricity? If you have been committing any of the sins mentioned above, a few simple changes can ensure you stop wasting electricity and your own money in the process!
