Diving into the blog world
Thinking about my future
While contemplating my future, I realised that there are a lot of things in my life that I need to improve.
My health
I’m a 122kg Maori boy with too much fat, a propensity to eat all manner of foods and a sedentary position which sees the only exercise during my day is the walk to the kitchen to eat lunch
My fatherhoodness
I’ve focussed too long on my work, personal career development, career growth, position enhancement and climbing that darned corporate ladder has seen my children take a back seat. I’ve missed seeing them complete a lot of goals, and not been available to teach them a great deal of skills and learnings I know would have been of assistance to them (even in their short 11 & 9 years)
My husbandness
With great power come great responsibility….or irresponsibility. Throughout my marriage, I have spend much of it relying on my wife to undertake the vast majority of tasks around the house. Wanting to relax after a hard day in the office (where I was so physically taxed) saw me sit back and read books or watch television while life continued around me – Tarn cooking dinner and then cleaning up afterward, Tarn overseeing the completion of homework by the kids, Tarn organising the kids for showers/baths or putting the kids to bed.
My emotions
Growing up with some poor parenting myself and never learning how to deal with emotions has led to some extremely poor self management techniques. That, coupled with Depression and Anxiety has led me to be……well, kind of messed up (not in a cut myself or harm animals kind of way, more in a “I’m upset so I am going to absolutely blow my stack and then eat a whole bunch of terrible food” kind of way)
Where to start
Some people like to refer to 千里之行,始於足下 or a “journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step” – Laozi. I’m not too sure that is too helpful when you are unsure of the direction (and as a male, I’m not asking for directions or a map). This blog though, is my first step. A method of self reflection that will assist me in moving forward on my thousand mile journey of improvement.
And so, instead of dipping my toes into the world of blogs, I dive head first (with legs and feet bent to form a staple) and try my best to not only cause a huge splash, but to show others that it can be done and can also be done with a smile.
